Five Ghost Track

One morning, the father of a wealthy family turns into a machine. And with him, the whole house. This transformation has acoustic consequences: everywhere it rattles, hisses and clatters. Language dissolves into mechanical rhythms. As mechanisation progresses, the question arises as to who actually works here: Man or machine?

The background to the radio play is historical research on the acoustic development of (textile) machines. The manufacturing machines of the 18th century sigh, groan and giggle. Modern textile machines are much faster, more effective and above all louder. This transition is vocally traced in the sound installation. The Art Nouveau architect Henry van de Velde lived in the time of this (acoustic) transition. His rapturous texts about machines strongly resemble the Futurist Manifesto (1909). In the sound installation, they are collaged and sung by a “Choir of Futurists”.

Calm down and keep breathing

This multi-channel installation is simply a breathing, reactive space.

FOLLOW ME

Voices move in a circle, encircling the visitors. They follow each other, describe, conjecture, project, reflect. Movement, dynamics, demarcation. The visitors lose themselves in the surging sea of voices, in the social game of following, leading, projecting, unfolding and raising awareness.
The installation is part of the eponymous cycle of works FOLLOW ME, which was funded with a radio play grant from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, promoted as a live performance by the GVL/ Neustart Kultur, premiered at the Sonohr Festival 2022 and will be performed again at documenta 15 in public space in Kassel in mid-August.
The 8-channel installation was produced during the Field Kitchen Academy 2020 together with Hans Peter Kuhn, Emilie Wright, James Wood, Eva Macali, Charlotte Colmant.

We are shaped, manipulated and moved by the events around us at all times in our everyday lives. They sneak in between our teeth, stick to our clothes or rush into us as if through a funnel. What we experience has the potential to penetrate deep within us, to reverberate and become part of who we are.
The MYSTHISCH ENT-SCHIRMENDE OVERALL is a second skin, a magical object to reflect this process.
Meta-social entities sit on it and absorb sounds, which they spit out again, connected into a system. We can collect our sounds and those of the environment in it, shape them and play with them. The MESO suit isolates the wearer from the outside world and allows a new, playful perspective on the sensory flood. Unworn, as a stripped skin, it is a passive witness to the stream passing by.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

I work as a visual artist, entering the field of sound art with my installations and performances. I compose spaces which sharpen perception and thereby enforce the perceiver’s action. My sound materials are self-built instruments and field recordings of my main instrument: The world surrounding us. I live in Leipzig, Germany.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

Not to big to build up a network to support each other, but not too small so that you don’t feel like you’re being watched all the time.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future?

Recently I created a piece for public space about village development of a little village around Hannover with Universitäts Chor Hannover, soon I will stay in Linz at Salzamt Linz to get in Touch with the Donauweibchen, which is a water nymphe.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

I don´t like not being paid for my work. Art is my job and I want to be able to make a living from it.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work?

The processes, causes and rules of natural, social and cultural realities.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?
I am Stefan Schleupner. I live and work in Leipzig and Tel Aviv. I am currently studying media art as a master student at the HFBK Dresden and the Bezalel Academy Jerusalem.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?
My life is not focused on Leipzig as a location. I find many places in the world attractive.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?
Lately I have been working on natural and artificial electromagnetism.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?
As an artist you always live under pressure in various forms. I am very happy to have the possibility and the means to distance myself from existing systems and structures with the help of artistic media such as music or painting.
I work a lot with computers, so I am always impressed by how the market tries to adapt and customises its offers for me , but I try not to be seduced by the sweet fruits of cognitive capitalism : )

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work ?
I am influenced and inspired by everything.
In my work I focus on the unexpected.

Simon Schäfer / Der Warst

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

I am involved in all kinds of artistic expression. I studied sculpture and media art, make music, practice circuit bending and creative experimental electronics udn nud dun. When I go on stage, I often do so under the name “der Warst”.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

Leipzig has a diverse cultural landscape, but it’s still relatively graspable. There’s enough going on, but not so much that it sucks my soul dry with FOMO.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

I recently had an exhibition called Gl0tchbl0K for which I built a floor platform that you could play and glitch a Playstation2 with.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

Yes. You need to sell something all the time. It’s a pain in the ass.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work ?

I take the world apart and put it back together again.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

I have been living in Halle since 2019 and study at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule in the jewellery class. I mainly make sculptural objects that are often wearable or directly involve the body by inviting interaction. I’m also a member of the band “Schreddern” and produce music on my own with tapes and synthesizers.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

I’ve been slowly getting to know Leipzig and the art and cultural scene there lately. I’m incredibly pleased to see how interdisciplinarily, well connected and active the many locations are, away from the larger institutions. The greater Halle/Leipzig area radiates a strong invitation to participate in cultural life. The ZiXP Festival is one of my first exhibition opportunities in the city.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

My last project was a series of sounding textile objects for which I acquired a functional level of electronic knowledge. My work for ZiXP was also produced through this way of working. I will continue to work with the construction of an electronic-acoustic inner life for plastic forms made of textile; it opens up a great, childish and occasionally macabre and disturbing world.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? What would it be like without it ?

I would definitely think less about compromise if there was an unconditional basic income. There are many ways to live with creative work, but radically creating your own world without further calculation is definitely the greatest.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focuses in your work ?

In the last year and a half I have been working a lot with mechanical and electroacoustic sound production. I try to construct instruments in the sense of acoustic tools, extensions or interactive environments for the human body. Unconscious or reflexive emotions and the need for “childlike” behaviour and play are important themes to me – I think this is also why I feel inspired by crude audio electronics, modified toy keyboards and modular synthesizers.

If Leipzig were a sound, what would it be?

I can think of the many mechanical train and tram noises that I occasionally record with my phone on my way to Leipzig. Probably not particularly representative sounds, but some interesting fragments.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

Musician, composer, performer, director, my interest is in the complex score, plan, representation and their realisations: from the execution of strictly deterministic programmes to the attempts of non-prediction and the connections and feedback-loops existing between these concepts. My fields of work are music, theatre and performance.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

There are space and spaces

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

What are your influences and inspirations, your focuses in your work ?

It changes all the time. At the moment Niklas Luhmann, Hozan Yamamoto, for the first time in a long time John Coltrane, always and again Morton Feldman, always and again the world directly around me, always and constantly what I hear in it.

If Leipzig were a sound, what would it be?

A long-lasting, somewhat dirty, complex roaring in the mezzo-piano area, centrally located in the lower region of the listening area, but always interspersed with small sharp accents, impulses and highly noisy textures, punctuated by very isolated ppp – beats in the sub-bass sector.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

I’m Sébastien, I’m from Paris and I live in Leipzig since 2015. I play saxophones, mainly tenor, in different projects, from solo to orchestra. In solo, I extend the saxophone with the laptop and Supercollider, a sound programming language with which I generate artificial sounds or distribute and move the saxophone sounds in 3D.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

The subculture! I have found a very dynamic city here, where people are often interested in many different things. You often see the same face at very different events: a vernissage of an installation, a punk concert, a party or our LeipziXP concerts. I find that very refreshing compared to Paris or Berlin, where the scenes for experimental music are very specialised. I also have to say that so far it has been easy for me to network, to find a cheap studio and to get support for cultural projects.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

Lately I have been developing a new solo for saxophone and ambisonics. With the support of the KdFS and the Neustart/Kultur programme at Musikfonds and GVL, I was able to focus on this new solo during the pandemic. Ambisonics is a technique for positioning and moving sound in 3D space. It allows me to create an immersive soundscape and demultiply the possibilities of the saxophone. Over the next few months I will be working on my original solo. So far it has only been acoustic and I will expand it into an electro-acoustic solo. I’m trying to control digital synthesizers that I program with Supercollider with the signal of the saxophone. I’ve already done tests with it and it feels like a very exciting field of experimentation!

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

Lately I have felt very privileged as I have received several grants one after the other which have relieved me of this pressure during the pandemic. Hopefully in the future I can make a good enough living from my activities as a musician, Shiatsu practitioner and LeipziXP organiser that I don’t have to feel that pressure so much. But I see the pressure more strongly from the organiser’s perspective. If venues for experimental music around the world were better supported, we as musicians would have less pressure: it would mean more concert opportunities, fairer wages, easier organisation of tours.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work?

In my work I focus on the subtleties of sound. I work with sound as matter that I can slowly process and manipulate in order to feel every detail, every overtone. I am very inspired by the French scene where there is a very strong tradition for experimental saxophone there. But my biggest influences are the people I work with. In that case, Artur Vidal from my Sax Duet is very important for me, as well as the IMO Orchestra, with whom both I developed my musical language. And lately, the initiatives WISP and ZiMMT here in Leipzig, with whom I discovered the Ambisonics technique and without whom I would not have developed my new solo.

If Leipzig were a sound, what would it be ?

If I have to answer that literal, it would probably be the tram noises echoing off the facades of the houses in Eisenbahstraße. If I look at it metaphorically, it would be the buzzing of a beehive from which specific recognizable sounds would regularly emerge.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

I am a composer and percussionist in the fields of experimental and improvised music. I studied percussion at the “Hogeschool voor de kunsten Arnhem” (NL) and have been living in Leipzig as a freelance musician and independent piano builder since 2016. My current focus is on the bands Holzig and H. C. Behrendtsen as well as my solo project, which is dedicated to song-like as well as sound research structures. My focus there is on the Wurlitzer piano and the prepared bass drum, subtly enhanced by electronics.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

An existing, ever-changing and evolving subculture and a friendly network of local artists.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

In autumn my second solo album will be released as well as the debut album of H. C. Behrendtsen. I have been focusing on the preparations for that and some concerts lately.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? What would it be like without it ?

I shift most of the capitalist pressure to my piano-making craft. That is a quite conscious choice.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work ?

Extra-musical inspiration for me is generally being on the road and living (gardening) in the nature. I’m also a big fan of releases from the Norwegian label Hubro.

Everything that surrounds me influences me.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

My instruments are singing bowls made of quartz. Their sounds are highly immersive and I have been working for over 10 years to make this industrial product, which is actually made to grow silicon, known as a concert instrument or a performative space_sound_installation in as many contexts as possible.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

I love the huge diversity in Leipzig, which is still graspable and makes it possible to get to know all kinds of different things.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future?

I’m working on a programme and a CD with the project “echo_von_nichts”. I am also working on spatial sound systems. At the moment I’m in a residency in Berlin and trying out new collaborations.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? What would it be like without it?

I think a basic income would be useful.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work ?

Ah. In my youth I was almost exclusively involved with classical music, my heroes were Schoenberg, Mahler, Bach, Shostakovich. I also remember Patti Smith, Peter Gabriel and Frank Zappa. Currently I try to absorb as few influences as possible in order to be open to my own ideas.

If Leipzig were a sound, what would it be ?

A low bass drone: I really like to hear the big old planes taking off in the north.

Malo Moray

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

Hi, I’m Malo – I’m a double bass player, composer and bandleader of my ambient-kraut- jazz project Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee.
For me, playing is about just that – playing. I’m curious to discover what I didn’t know before. My thoroughly experimental, contemporary music is therefore actually more like adventurous music for me. I deal a lot with free improvisation, whereby I feel myself above all as a storyteller. I aim to show how great it feels to connect with yourself and to give a voice to your own expression.
The easiest way for me to do that is through music.

What makes Leipzig attractive to you as an artist?

I’ve been a resident here for 10 years and am firmly rooted here, especially through family and friends – this social space gives me the opportunity to articulate myself artistically in a calm and connected way.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

Over the last year I have produced 5 albums with members of my band The Inflatable Knee. I am currently working with Leipzig print artists on a collaborative LP release of the second album in this series. With Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee I will be touring Germany in 2022 for about 30 concerts in summer and autumn.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

At the moment I have a day job so I can work freely.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work ?

Music itself is my inspiration – through my relationship with it I always get to know myself better and grow with it. I don’t create music, it is present anyway – I give it a voice through my actions. Even if my music doesn’t sound like it directly, I see myself as a rock musician. Im am driven by the feeling of the unmediated, powerful expression brought by the feeling of freedom. At the same time, it’s important for me to keep in mind that it’s not about what I do, but how I do it – the focus of my projects is the honest and undisguised dialogue with my fellow musicians – this gives rise to a flow of energy that feeds my being as a musician.

If Leipzig were a noise, what would it be?

A loud one.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

I work as a sound and voice artist, writer, director and curator in the fields of radio, installation, performance and walking arts and am co-curator of GERÄUSCHKULISSE. My works show a strong impression of the specific characteristics of phenomena, people and places. They oscillate between narrative and purely sound-based with a strong fascination for the fine line between fiction and reality. I am particularly interested in personal and social boundaries and the breaking out of them, as well as the confrontation and encounter of different horizons of experience.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

Up to now, there has always been a lot of free space that has been used experimentally by many creative people.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

A lot with nature sounds, the relationship between people and nature, climate change.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

That would be great! Basic income for everyone!

What are your influences and inspirations, your focuses in your work ?

Traditions like the Situationists, Acoustic Ecology, Musique Concrète, Dada and sound poetry influence my work but also many great artists and writers and special people I meet on the street every day.

If Leipzig were a sound, what would it be?

The pulsating, singing squeak of an old tram, echoing from far away in the forest at dawn, while birds begin to sing and a horse neighs.

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?

I think it’s great to have ears and to spoil them with sounds. I indulge in this activity as a music and sound creator, as well as a sound technician, mixing at concerts or mastering produced music. I can also make a great cappuccino and many other things.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

That it is full of other musicians and cultural workers, and that there is a large audience.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future?

I have been busy assembling solar panels and working on my resonant bodies. At the end of the month I’m taking part in a performance in Karlsruhe.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

Not directly – but when I make art I can’t work for wages at the same time – so sometimes I have to make a choice. It would be much nicer without it.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work ?

Influences are the people around me and the sounds of my environment. In this work, my focus is the self-resonance of the objects I play on.

Jonas Petry / Nime

Can you introduce yourself briefly ?
Nime aka Jonas Petry (*1994)
I live and work mainly in Leipzig as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, artist manager and festival director. My repertoire includes prepared drums, piano, daf, tonbak and natural and artificial found objects.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?
I find it interesting to be active in a city where the field of experimental music is growing. I would like to be involved in this process both artistically and organisationally, and to be part of the exchange taking place within it.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future?
I am currently moving into a new music studio, which I am very much looking forward to. There I would like to work on an installative live setup for prepared drums for Nime, among other things. Besides my solo project, I am part of Nadelør – an electroacoustic duo together with sound and media artist burgund t brandt dedicated to post-serial music, and Gutari – an electroacoustic noise duo together with sound artist Davide Luciani. I am also a member of the band Welten, which has just released its fourth album. I am also the chairman of the board of Habeatus e.V. and co-director of the project Seanaps Festival – Transdisciplinary Approaches in Experimental Music and Culture in Leipzig since its first edition in 2017. Since 2020, I have also been working as the manager of the Berlin-based musician and composer Mohammad Reza Mortazavi.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?
Yes. Trying to counteract this pressure feels absurd. On the one hand, I feel privileged to be able to live a life for art at all until now. On the other hand, there is a constant pressure to perform, which can trigger a lot of negative things. Art can be a free space from this. But it also involves organising oneself individually and with others in order to create a situation that provides this freedom for everyone in the long term.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work?
I am interested in the possibilities of sound and rhythmic interweavings in the living world.

If Leipzig were a sound, what would it be?
The bell-like sound of industrial lampshades.

Robert Rehnig

Can you briefly introduce yourself ?

I am Robert, working in the fields of electroacoustic music and sound art. In recent years I have mainly created electroacoustic music and sound design for theatre and dance theatre companies, as well as for audio books and a documentary film. Currently, however, I am again creating more stand-alone artistic works, installations, acousmatic pieces and collages, but also music for instruments and live electronic.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

A residual sense of optimism, that you still have the feeling that you can influence how the city shapes. On the one hand, a scene with manageable human dimensions and yet, at the same time, wich is quite well connected regionally and internationally.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future?

Most recently I started a small series of soundscraps collages dedicated to all the sounds I used for the background soundscapes in theatre, with whom I felt I didn’t spend enough time. During Corona, I also wrote the music for Oliver Matthes’ and Volker Klotzsch’s film “Und ruhig fließt der Rhein”. – Currently I have started two compositions: one purely acousmatic and one for instruments and live electronics. Both will certainly be finished in the coming year.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

Quite. Often there is a lack of time, in order to deal with ideas more deeply. Sometimes, it seems as if artists are more a role in society than a profession. Imagine permanently employed visual artists or playwrights. But this would again raise many questions, and under real conditions would most likely lead to an unjust system with different classes, as is the case with music teachers today. The question would therefore be, what would a society have to look like that allows free but truly rewarded artistic-creative work?

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work?

I find it increasingly difficult to answer this question. For a long time it was the work with very reduced source material. I was and am interested in increasing the audience’s awareness of their everyday acoustic environment. However, there is a whole cosmos of artists with the same goal. I’m happy if I can bring a little into this world and at the same time hopefully leave enough time to explore said cosmos.

If Leipzig were a sound, what would it be?

Perhaps it would be a place: I like to spend time at a certain, less frequented point in the southern Auwald. There, the soundscape often seems like a rural-urban in-between world.

Walburga Walde

Can you briefly introduce yourself ?

I am a singer and vocal coach. The voice as an unfathomable phenomenon and vocal improvisation in different contexts and artistic constellations have been kept me engaged for years. The unknown, the not directly tangible in a performance – which surprises and fascinates me as well as the fact that improvisation transforms the space and the experience of those present, whether listening or playing. It is a space of its own, which also arises in my work with vocal improvisation in choirs and workshops.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

Leipzig is a multicultural, young city with enough space and potential for artistic creation, as seen and realised by many artists and creative people. Personally, I also appreciate a special feature of the city: Leipzig’s extensive “green belt”, nature and the Auwald forest as a source of inspiration and resplenishment for myself and my work.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

Lately I have been busy with the arrangement of Sorbian poems and songs – working on voice sounds, loops and compositions for a documentary film which is currently in the making. This programme will soon be recorded as a duo with violonist Izabela Kaldunska.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? What would it be like without it ?

I’d rather not answer that question.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work ?

I focus on the listening experience and the body. I have often worked with dancers and engaged myself with dance and bodywork, which makes me perceive conscious body awareness as a connection to the voice and a source of inspiration for improvisation. Impressions of any (artistic) kind are inspirations for musical expression. I often work with poetry and lyrics.

If Leipzig were a sound, what would it be ?

A somewhat low-frequency breeze that constantly brushes / blows along the auricle.

Can you briefly introduce yourself ?

I am a composer and a flutist; when composing I love slowness and inner peace, the pondering and thinking through with the help of musical notation. When playing the flute, I love the lively creation of sound and the challenges that composed music poses to me as a performer. When I improvise, I enjoy and fear the spontaneity of the moment and try to incorporate my experiences as a composer and as an interpreter of other music.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

I live in tradition-conscious Dresden and enjoy the openness and love of experimentation in the Leipzig music scene and among the audience.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

I play with Sinfonietta Dresden and in various chamber music ensembles, lead the composers’ class in Halle and am currently setting up an inclusive experimental improvisation orchestra with the Farbwerk association. Besides these tasks, I always try to find time for composing.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

Yes – very much and I think a lot about how “capitalist thinking” also influences our way of making and dealing with art.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focuses in your work ?

Composers: Jörg Herchet, Scelsi, Crumb, Cage, Eastern European music, also the artistic scene in Dresden in my childhood…..

I make music with my voice and various wind instruments. In addition, I paint and am naturally interested in the connections that can open up between the shaping of sounds and the application of colours. Ideas for this work, I gather wherever I can find them, sounds, textures, motifs, atmospheres.

In Leipzig there are many possibilities for small spaces.

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future ?

Finding the right mix between art, earning a living and free time and then making it happen.

If I didn’t have to earn money, I wouldn’t do anything different artistically, but I would probably do it very differently.

Can you briefly introduce yourself ?

I am a freelance sound artist. I work site-specifically and research-based on everything that make sounds. The main instrument is the voice as a versatile, sometimes rattling, sometimes purring sound machine. Thematically, my works revolve around memory culture and the coexistence of human animals and machines.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist?

Leipzig is very valuable to me as an artist because autonomous initiatives are possible and here, and many exist independently of large institutions. I appreciate the exchange and the peace, the neighbourly proximity, and the artistic connection to the surrounding space. A good place to work free(r).

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future?

Just finishing a very long project on the early concentration camp Oranienburg – the project includes an audio walk and a publication that will be released in early September. Next I plan to work on the subjectivity of cars, as well as a project on colonialism and information technology. And then there is the never-ending task of freeing myself from internal and external pressures.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? What would it be like without it ?

Yes, definitely, in every pore, in my demons of performance pressure. What would it be like without these demons, without the pressure? That’s a difficult question. After all, it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. I think it would be good if there were a state in which one could be permissive and free and at the same time not be at the mercy of such (subliminal) existential pressure. How can that be done? Through solidarity and networks among artists, and also through better nationwide, financial, and not so short-term support, perhaps.

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work?

Talking to artist friends, listening to the radio, exhibitions, other people’s theoretical texts. Which other works inspire me in particular changes very often, and mainly through inspiring conversations and connections. Most recently, I was very impressed by the work of the Pungwe collective. If I were to start here now thanking the people who give me new ideas, I would very likely forget a great many, or never finish. I am very grateful to this network. In relation to the work exhibited here, the conversations with Clemens von Wedemeyer, Angelika Waniek, Alicia Franzke, Paul Hauptmeier, Martin Recker, Stefanie Smolkina, Su Yu Hsin, the visits to the museums in Limbach-Oberfrohna, Weimar and Chemnitz, and the collaboration with the team – Maxi Pongratz, Marie Wolff, Johannes Gabriel and Julia Preuß were very important for me. Also inspiring were the texts “Marx’s Ghosts” by Derrida and “Animism” by Anselm Franke and Irene Albers.

What makes Leipzig attractive for you as an artist ?

So much! Leipzig offers the mixture of big city and nature. It has a relatively small scene, but incredibly exciting and open artists, clubs and galleries with whom I like to exchange ideas! 🙂

What have you been busy with lately and what are your projects for the near future?

At the moment I am working a lot on my solo programme “What Tenderness sounds like” and how I can use interactive art as a mean of exchange 🙂

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

Definitely. I could more easily engage in creative processes and not worry so much about “how far I can go with this project” and “if they are even worth it”. The best projects came about with grants where I didn’t have to worry about money for 3-4 months. COULD HAPPILY HAPPEN MORE OFTEN 🙂

What are your influences and inspirations, your focuses in your work ?

The human body on a psychological/chemiophysical and physical level, spatiality and interdisciplinarity.

Lively scene, away from the big focus, therefore freer in the sense of uncommercial freedom, allowing for experiments without pressure to produce results (which I would also describe as commercialisation)

I am currently working on stage music for Dresden and Rostock, a museum installation in Sauerland and preparing my contributions for the ZiXP Festival.

Do you feel any capitalist pressure in your artistic life? How would it be without it ?

Yes, and it has increased noticeably in the last 10 years. Without commercial pressure, that would be a dream!

What are your influences and inspirations, your focus in your work ?

One focus is the reduction, the omission, the uncovering as a principle and the use of tools/software against the instruction manual.

Jonas Petry / Nime

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Nime alias Jonas Petry (*1994) Ich lebe und arbeite hauptsächlich in Leipzig als Multiinstrumentalist, Komponist, Künstlermanager und Festivalleiter. Mein Repertoire umfasst präparierte Drums, Klavier, Daf, Tonbak sowie natürliche und synthetische Fundstücke.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Ich finde es interessant in einer Stadt aktiv zu sein, die im Bereich der Experimantalmusik in einem Findungsprozess ist. Gerne möchte ich das künstlerisch und organisatorisch mitgestalten und im Austausch stehen.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Aktuell ziehe ich in ein neues Musikatelier worauf ich mich sehr freue. Dort möchte ich unter anderem für Nime an einem installativen Live Setup für preparierte Drums arbeiten. Neben meinem Soloprojekt bin ich Teil von Nadelør – einem elektroakustischen Duo zusammen mit dem Klang- und Medienkünstler burgund t brandt, das sich der postseriellen Musik widmet und Gutari – einem elektroakustischen Noise-Duo zusammen mit dem Klangkünstler Davide Luciani. Außerdem bin ich Mitglied der Band Welten, die gerade ihr viertes Album veröffentlicht hat. Außerdem bin ich Vorstandsvorsitzender des Habeatus e.V. und Co-Direktor des Projekts Seanaps Festival – Transdisziplinäre Ansätze in experimenteller Musik und Kultur in Leipzig seit der ersten Ausgabe 2017. Seit 2020 arbeite ich auch als Manager des in Berlin lebenden Musikers und Komponisten Mohammad Reza Mortazavi.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Ja. Diesem Druck etwas entgegensetzen zu wollen fühlt sich absurd an. Einerseits fühle ich mich priviligiert überhaupt bis jetzt ein Leben für die Kunst leben zu können. Andererseits ist da ein beständiger Verwertungs- und Leistungsdruck, der viel negatives auslösen kann. Die Kunst kann ein Freiraum hiervon sein. Aber dazu gehört auch die Arbeit sich individuell und mit anderen zu organisieren, um zu versuchen diese Freiheit für sich und andere nachhaltig gewährleisten zu können.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Ich interessiere mich für klangliche Möglichkeiten sowie rhythmischen Verflechtungen in der Lebenswelt.

Das Glockenähnliche Geräusch von Industrielampenschirmen.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich bin Sängerin und Gesangscoach. Die Stimme als unergründliches Phänomen und vokale Improvisation in verschiedenen Kontexten und künstlerischen Konstellationen beschäftigen mich seit Jahren. Das Unbekannte, nicht direkt greifbare in einer Performance – welches überrascht, fasziniert mich und ebenso, dass Improvisation den Raum und das Erleben der Anwesenden, ob hörend oder spielend, transformiert. Es ist ein eigener Raum der entsteht auch in meiner Arbeit mit Vokalimprovisation in Chören und Workshops.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Leipzig ist eine multikulturelle, junge Stadt mit genügend Raum und Potential zum künstlerischen Schaffen welches auch von vielen Künstlern und Kreativen so gesehen und realisiert wird. Ich persönlich schätze auch eine Besonderheit der Stadt: den umfangreichen Leipziger “grünen Gürtel”, die Natur und den Auwald als Inspirations- und Auftankquelle für mich selbst und meine Arbeit.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Ich habe mich in letzter Zeit mit der Verklanglichung und dem Arrangement sorbischer Gedichte und Lieder beschäftigt – an Stimmsounds, Loops und Kompositionen gearbeitet für einen Dokumentar – Film welcher gerade im Entstehungsprozess ist. Dieses Programm wird demnächst aufgenommen im Duo mit der Violonistin Izabela Kaldunska.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Darauf möchte ich gerade ich nicht antworten.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Ich fokussiere mich aufs Zuhören und den Körper. Ich hab oft mit Tänzern zusammen gearbeitet und mich mit Tanz und Körperarbeit beschäftigt und nehme bewusste Körperwahrnehmung als Anbindung zur Stimme und Inspirationsquelle für Improvisation wahr. Eindrücke jeglicher (künstlerischer) Art sind Inspirationen für musikalischen Ausdruck. Ich arbeite oft mit Lyrik und Texten.

Wenn Leipzig ein Geräusch wäre, welches wäre es ?

ein etwas tieffrequenter Windhauch der beständig an der Ohrmuschel entlangstreift /weht

Wir werden im Alltag zu jeder Zeit von den Geschehnissen um uns herum geformt, manipuliert und bewegt. Sie schleichen sich zwischen unsere Zähne, bleiben an unserer Kleidung haften oder stürzen wie durch einen Trichter in uns hinein. Was wir erleben hat das Potential tief in uns zu dringen, nachzuhallen und zum Teil unserer Selbst zu werden.
Der MYSTHISCH ENT-SCHIRMENDE OVERALL ist eine zweite Haut, ein magischer Gegenstand zur Reflexion dieses Prozesses.
Meta-Soziale Wesenheiten sitzen auf ihm und nehmen Klänge auf, die sie, verbunden zu einem System, wieder ausspeien. Wir können darin unsere Geräusche und die der Umgebung sammeln, sie formen und mit ihnen spielen. Der MESO-Anzug isoliert die Träger:in von der Außenwelt und erlaubt eine neue, spielerische Perspektive auf die Sinnesflut. Ungetragen, als abgestreifte Haut, ist er ein passiver Zeuge des an ihm vorbeiziehenden Stromes.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen?
Ich arbeite als bildender Künstler und betrete mit meinen Installationen und Performances den Bereich der Klangkunst. Ich komponiere Räume, die die Wahrnehmung schärfen und dadurch das Handeln des Wahrnehmenden erzwingen. Mein Klangmaterial sind selbstgebaute Instrumente und Feldaufnahmen meines Hauptinstrumentes: Die Welt, die uns umgibt. Ich lebe in Leipzig, Deutschland.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in?
Nicht zu groß, um ein Netzwerk aufzubauen, um sich gegenseitig zu unterstützen, aber auch nicht zu klein, damit man nicht das Gefühl hat, die ganze Zeit beobachtet zu werden.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?
Kürzlich habe ich ein Stück für den öffentlichen Raum über die Dorfentwicklung eines kleinen Dorfes in der Nähe von Hannover mit dem Universitätschor Hannover gemacht, demnächst werde ich in Linz im Salzamt Linz wohnen, um mit dem Donauweibchen, einer Wassernymphe, in Kontakt zu kommen.

Ich mag es nicht, nicht für meine Arbeit bezahlt zu werden. Die Kunst ist mein Beruf und ich möchte davon leben können.

Die Prozesse, Ursachen und Regeln der natürlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Realitäten.

Mein leben fokussiert sich nicht auf den Standort Leipzig. Ich finde viele Orte der Welt attraktiv.

In letzter Zeit habe ich mich mit natürlichem und künstlichem Elektromagnetismus beschäftigt.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Als Künstler lebt man immer unter Druck in verschiedensten Formen. Ich bin sehr froh in meinem Leben die Möglichkeit und den Zugang zu haben mich mit Hilfe von künstlerischen Medien, wie Musik oder Malerei von vorhandenen Systemen und Strukturen zu distanzieren.

Ich arbeite viel mit Computern, daher bin ich immer wieder davon beeindruckt wie der Markt versucht individuelle Angebote auf mich anzupassen, versuche aber mich nicht von den süssen Früchten des kognitiver Kapitalismus verführen zu lassen : )

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich beschäftige mich mit allen möglichen Arten künstlerischer Ausdrucksformen. Ich habe Bildhauerei und Medienkunst studiert, mache Musik, praktiziere circuit bending und kreative Experimentalelektronik udn nud dun. Wen ich mich auf Bühnen stelle, mache ich dies oft unter dem Namen “der Warst”.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Leipzig hat eine diverse Kulturlandschaft, ist dabei aber immer noch relativ übersichtlich. Es ist genug los, aber nicht so viel, dass es mir vor lauter FOMO die Seele aussaugt.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Ich hatte vor kurzem eine Ausstellung namens Gl0tchbl0K, für die ich eine Bodenplattform baute, mit der man eine Playstation2 spielen und glitchen könnte.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Ja. Ständig muss was verkauft werden. Geht mir aufn Sack.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Ich nehme die Welt auseinander und bau sie neu wieder zusammen.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich lebe seit 2019 in Halle und studiere an der Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule in der Klasse für Schmuck. Hauptsächlich stelle ich plastische Objekte her, die oft tragbar sind oder den Körper direkt mit einbeziehen, indem sie zur Interaktion auffordern. Außerdem bin ich Mitglied der Band “Schreddern” und produziere alleine Musik mit Tapes und Synthesizern.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Ich lerne Leipzig und die dortige Kunst- und Kulturszene in der letzten Zeit langsam kennen. Mich freut unglaublich zu sehen, wie interdisziplinär vernetzt und aktiv die vielen Locations abseits der größeren Institutionen sind. Für mich strahlt der Großraum Halle/Leipzig eine starke Einladung zur Mitgestaltung und Teilnahme am kulturellen Leben aus. Das ZiXP Festival ist für mich eine der ersten Ausstellungsgelegenheiten in der Stadt.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Mein letztes Projekt war eine Serie von klingenden Textilobjekten, für die ich mir ein funktionales Maß an Elektronikkenntnissen angeeignet habe. Aus dieser Arbeitsweise heraus entstand auch meine Arbeit für das ZiXP. Mit der Konstruktion eines elektronisch-akustischen Innenlebens für plastische Formen aus Textil werde ich mich weiter beschäftigen, es eröffnet eine großartige, kindische und gelegentlich makaber-verstörende Welt.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Ich würde auf jeden Fall weniger über Kompromisse nachdenken, wenn es ein bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen gäbe. Es gibt viele Arten, mit kreativer Arbeit zu leben, aber das radikale Erschaffen einer eigenen Welt ohne weiteres Kalkül ist definitiv die großartigste.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

In den vergangenen eineinhalb Jahren habe ich mich viel mit der mechanischen und elektroakustischen Erzeugung von Klängen auseinandergesetzt. Dabei versuche ich, Instrumente im Sinne von akustischen Werkzeugen, Erweiterungen oder interaktiven Umgebungen für den menschlichen Körper zu konstruieren. Mir sind unbewusste oder reflexive Emotionen und das Bedürfnis nach “kindischem” Verhalten und Spiel wichtige Themen – ich glaube auch darum fühle ich mich inspiriert von kruder Audioelektronik, modifizierten Spielzeugkeyboards und modularen Synthesizern.

Wenn Leipzig ein Geräusch wäre, welches wäre es ?

Mir fallen die vielen mechanischen Zug- und Tramgeräusche ein, die ich gelegentlich unterwegs nach Leipzig mit dem Telefon aufnehme. Wahrscheinlich keine besonders repräsentativen Geräusche, aber ein interessantes Fragment.

Five Ghost Tracks

Eines Morgens verwandelt sich der Vater einer wohlhabenden Familie in eine Maschine. Und mit ihm gleich das ganze Haus. Diese Verwandlung hat akustische Folgen: Überall rattert, zischt und klappert es. Die Sprache löst sich in mechanische Rhythmen auf. Mit fortschreitender Mechanisierung stellt sich die Frage, wer hier eigentlich tatsächlich funktioniert: Mensch oder Maschine?

Hintergrund des Hörspiels ist eine historische Recherche zur akustischen Entwicklung von (Textil-)Maschinen. Die Manufaktur-Maschinen des 18. Jahrhunderts seufzen, ächzen und kichern. Moderne Textilmaschinen sind um einiges schneller, effektiver und vor allem lauter. Dieser Übergang wird in der Klanginstallation stimmlich nachvollzogen. Der Jugendstil-Architekt Henry van de Velde lebte in der Zeit dieses (akustischen) Übergangs. Seine schwärmerischen Texte über Maschinen ähneln stark dem futuristischen Manifest (1909). In der Klanginstallation werden sie collagiert und gesungen von einem “Chor der Futuristen”.

FOLLOW ME

Stimmen bewegen sich im Kreis, umkreisen die Besucher*innen. Sie folgen einander, beschreiben, mutmaßen, projizieren, refektieren. Bewegung, Dynamik, Abgrenzung. Die Besucher*innen verlieren sich im wogenden Stimmenmeer, im gesellschaftlichen Spiel aus Folgen, Führen, Projektion, Entfiehen und Bewusstmachung. Die Installation ist Teil des gleichnamigen Werkzyklus FOLLOW ME, der mit einem Hörspielstipendium der Film- und Medienstiftung NRW gefördert wurde, als Live-Performance von der GVL/ Neustart Kultur gefördert, beim Sonohr Festival 2022 uraufgeführt und zur documenta 15 im öffentlichen Raum in Kassel Mitte August wiederaufgeführt wird. Die 8-Kanal-Installation wurde während der Field Kitchen Academy 2020 zusammen mit Hans Peter Kuhn, Emilie Wright, James Wood, Eva Macali, Charlotte Colmant produziert.

So viel! Leipzig bietet die Mischung aus Großstadt und Natur. Es hat eine relativ kleine Szene, aber wahnsinnig spannende und offene Künstler*Innen, Clubs, Galerien mit denen ich gerne im Austausch bin! 🙂

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Derzeit beschäftige ich mich viel mit meinem Solo Programm „What Tenderness sounds like“ und wie ich mit dem Ansatz von interaktiver Kunst einen Austausch ermöglichen kann! 🙂

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Auf jeden Fall. Ich könnte mich leichter auf kreative Prozesse einlassen und nicht so viel grübeln über „wie weit ich mit diesem Projekt gehen kann“ und „ob diese sich überhaupt lohnen“. Die besten Projekte entstanden mit Stipendien, in denen ich mir 3-4 Monate keine Gedanken über Geld machen musste. KÖNNTE GERNE ÖFTER VORKOMMEN 🙂

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Der menschliche Körper auf psychischer/physischer und physikalischer Ebene, Spatialität und Interdisziplinarität

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich bin freischaffende Soundkünstlerin. Ich arbeite ortspezifisch und recherchebasiert an allem, was klingt. Hauptinstrument ist die Stimme als vielseitige, mal ratternde mal schnurrende Soundmaschine. Thematisch drehen sich meine Arbeiten um Erinnerungskultur und das Zusammenleben von menschlichen Tieren und Maschinen.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Leipzig ist sehr wertvoll für mich als Künstlerin, weil es hier viele eigenständige Initiativen möglich und vorhanden sind, die unabhängig von großen Institutionen sind. Ich schätze den Austausch und die Ruhe, die nachbarschaftliche Nähe, und die künstlerische Anbindung an den umliegenden Raum. Ein Ort guter um frei(er) zu arbeiten.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Gerade geht ein sehr langes Projekt zum frühen KZ Oranienburg zuende – das Projekt umfasst ein Audiowalk und eine Publikation, die Anfang September veröffentlicht werden. Als nächstes plane ich, mich mit der Subjektivtät von Autos zu beschäftigen, sowie ein Projekt über Kolonialismus und Informationstechnologie. Und dann gibt es die nie abgeschlossene Aufgabe sich von innerem und äußerem Druck freizuspielen.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Ja, ganz sicher, in jeder Pore, in meinen Dämonen des Leistungsdrucks. Wie wäre es ohne diese Dämonen, ohne den Druck? Das ist eine schwierige Frage. Schließlich ist es einfacher sich das Ende der Welt vorzustellen als das Ende des Kapitalismus. Ich denke, es wäre gut, wenn es einen Zustand gäbe, in dem man freizügig und frei sein kann und zugleich nicht einem solchen (unterschwelligen) Existenzdruck ausgeliefert wäre. Wie kann das gehen? Durch Solidarität und Netzwerke unter Künstler*innen und auch durch bessere flächendeckende, finanzielle, und nicht so kurzfristige Förderung vielleicht.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Das Gespräch mit befreundeten Künstler*innen, Radiohören, Ausstellungen, Theorietexte anderer. Welche anderen Arbeiten mich dabei besonders inspirieren wechselt sehr oft, und vor allem durch inspirierende Gespräche und Anschlüsse. Zuletzt hat mich die Arbeit des Kollektivs Pungwe sehr beeindruckt. Wenn ich jetzt hier anfangen würde, den Menschen zu danken, die mich auf neue Ideen bringen, würde ich sehr wahrscheinlich sehr viele vergessen, oder nie fertig werden. Ich bin diesem Netzwerk sehr dankbar. In Bezug auf die hier ausgestellte Arbeit waren für mich die Gespräche mit Clemens von Wedemeyer, Angelika Waniek, Alicia Franzke, Paul Hauptmeier, Martin Recker, Stefanie Smolkina, Su Yu Hsin, die Besuche in den Museen in Limbach-Oberfrohna, Weimar und Chemnitz, und die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Team – Maxi Pongratz, Marie Wolff, Johannes Gabriel und Julia Preuß sehr wichtig. Inspirierend waren außerdem die Texte “Marx’ Gespenster” von Derrida und “Animism” von Anselm Franke und Irene Albers.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich mache Musik mit meiner Stimme und verschiedenen Blasinstrumenten. Darüber hinaus male ich und interessiere mich naturgemäß für die Verbindungen, die sich auftuen können zwischen dem Formen von Klängen und dem Auftragen von Farben. Die Ideen für diese Arbeit muss ich sammeln, wo immer ich sie finden kann, Klänge, Texturen, Motive, Atmosphären.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

In Leipzig gibt es viele Möglichkeiten auf kleinem Raum.

Die richtige Mischung zwischen Kunst, Broterwerb und offener Zeit zu herauszufinden und dann entsprechend zu handeln.

Müsste ich kein Geld verdienen, würde ich künstlerisch nichts Anderes machen, aber machen würde ich es vermutlich ganz anders.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich bin Komponistin und Flötistin; beim Komponieren liebe ich die Langsamkeit und innere Ruhe, das Abwägen und Durchdenken mit Hilfe der Notenschrift. Beim Flöte Spielen liebe ich die lebendige Erzeugung des Klanges und die Herausforderungen, die komponierte Musik an mich als Interpretin stellt. Wenn ich improvisiere, genieße und fürchte ich die Spontanität des Augenblicks und versuche, meine Erfahrungen als Komponistin und als Interpretin anderer Musik mit einfließen zu lassen.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Ich lebe im traditionsbewußten Dresden und genieße die Offenheit und Experimentierlust in der Leipziger Musikszene und beim Publikum.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Ich spiele bei Sinfonietta Dresden und in verschiedenen Kammermusikensembles, leite die Komponistenklasse Halle und baue gerade ein inklusives experimentelles Improvisationsorchester mit dem Verein farbwerk auf. Neben diesen Aufgaben versuche ich immer wieder, Zeit für das Komponieren zu finden.

Ja – sehr und ich denke viel darüber nach, wie das “kapitalistische Denken” auch unsere Art und Weise, Kunst zu machen und mit Kunst umzugehen, beeinflusst.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Komponisten: Jörg Herchet, Scelsi, Crumb, Cage, osteuropäische Musik, außerdem die Künstlerszene in Dresden in meiner Kindheit…..

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich bin Robert, arbeite im Bereich elektroakustische Musik und Klangkunst. In den letzten Jahren habe ich vorwiegend elektroakustische Musik und Sounddesign für Theater- und Tanztheater-Compagnien sowie für Hörbücher und einen Dokumentarfilm geschaffen. Aktuell entstehen jedoch wieder mehr alleinstehende künstlerische Arbeiten, Installationen, akusmatische Stücke und Collagen aber auch Musik für Instrumente und Live-Electronic.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Ein Rest von Aufbruchstimmung, dass man immer noch das Gefühl hat, die Stadt mit gestalten zu können. Einerseits eine gewisse Überschaubarkeit der Szene und trotzdem gleichzeitig eine ziemlich aktive regionale bis internationale Vernetzung.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Zuletzt habe ich mit einer kleinen Serie von Klangbild-Collagen begonnen, die sich all den teils im Hintergrund verorteten Klängen für das Theater widmet bei denen ich das Gefühl hatte, ich hatte nicht genügend Zeit mit ihnen. Während Corona ist auch die Filmmusik für Oliver Matthes’ und Volker Klotzschs Film “Und ruhig fließt der Rhein” entstanden. – Aktuell habe ich mit zwei Kompositionen begonnen: einer rein akusmatischen und einer für Instrumente und Live-Electronic. Beide Ergebnisse werden sicher im kommenden Jahr fertig sein.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Durchaus. Oft fehlt es vor allem an Zeit, um sich mit Ideen tiefgründiger auseinanderzusetzen. Es vermittelt sich manchmal der Eindruck, als wären Kunstschaffende mehr eine Rolle in der Gesellschaft als ein Beruf. Man stelle sich einmal festangestellte bildende Künstler*innen oder Theaterautor*innen vor. Aber auch das würde erneut viele Fragen aufwerfen und unter realen Bedingungen sehr wahrscheinlich wieder zu einem ungerechten System unterschiedlicher Klassen führen, wie man es heutzutage zB bei Musikschulpädagog*innen findet. Die Frage wäre daher, wie müsste eine Gesellschaft aussehen, die freie aber wirklich honorierte künstlerisch-kreative Arbeit ermöglicht.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Diese Frage kann ich zunehmend schlechter beantworten. Eine lange Zeit war es die Arbeit mit sehr reduziertem Ausgangsmaterial. Mir lag und liegt etwas an der Sensibilisierung des Publikums für seine alltägliche akustische Umgebung. Allerdings gibt es da einen ganzen Kosmos an Künstler*innen mit dem gleichen Ziel. Ich freu mich, wenn ich in diese Welt ein wenig hineintragen kann und gleichzeitig hoffentlich genügend Zeit bleibt, um eben auch diesen Kosmos zu explorieren.

Wenn Leipzig ein Geräusch wäre, welches wäre es ?

Vielleicht wäre es eher ein Ort: ich halte mich gern an einem bestimmten, weniger frequentierten Punkt im südlicheren Auwald auf. Dort kommt einem die Soundscape oft wie eine rural-urbane Zwischenwelt vor.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich finde es klasse Ohren zu haben und diese mit Klängen zu verwöhnen. Dieser Beschäftigung fröhne ich als Musik- und Klangschaffender, sowie als Mischer bei Konzerten oder dem Mastern von produzierter Musik. Außerdem kann ich prima Cappuccino machen und viele andere Dinge auch.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Das die statt voll ist mit anderen MusikerInnen und Kulturschaffenden, sowie es ein großes Publikum gibt.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Ich war damit beschäftigt Solarmodule zu montieren und meine Klangkörper auszuarbeiten. Ende des Monats nehme ich an einer Performance in Karlsruhe teil.

Nicht direkt – aber wenn ich Kunst mache kann ich nicht zur selben Zeit für Lohn arbeiten – deswegen muss ich mich schon manchmal entscheiden. Ohne dem wäre es noch schöner.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Einflüsse sind die Menschen die mich umgeben und die Klänge meiner Umwelt. In dieser Arbeit ist mein Fokus die Eigenresonanz der Objekte die ich bespiele.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich arbeite als Klang- und Stimmkünstlerin, Autorin, Regisseurin und Kuratorin in den Bereichen Radio, Installation, Performance und Walking Arts und bin Co-Kuratorin der GERÄUSCHKULISSE. Meine Werke zeigen ein starkes Gespür für die spezifischen Charakteristiken von Phänomenen, Menschen und Orten. Sie oszillieren zwischen narrativ und rein klangbasiert mit einer starken Faszination für den schmalen Grat zwischen Fiktion und Wirklichkeit. Mein besonderes Interesse gilt persönlichen und gesellschaftlichen Grenzen und Entgrenzungen, der Konfrontation und Begegnung verschiedener Erfahrungshorizonte.

Bisher gab es immer viel Freiraum, der von vielen kreativen Menschen experimentell bespielt wurde.

Traditionen wie die Situationisten, Acoustic Ecology, Musique Conrète, Dada und Lautpoesie beeinflussen meine Arbeit aber auch viele großartige Künstler*innen und Autor*innen sowie besondere Mitmenschen, denen ich jeden Tag auf der Straße gegegne.

Das pulsierend singende Quietschen einer alten Straßenbahn, die aus weiter Ferne im Wald zur Morgendämmerung wiederhallt, während Vögel zu singen beginnen und ein Pferd wiehert.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Hi, Ich bin Malo – Ich bin Kontrabassspieler, Komponist und Bandleader meines Ambient-Kraut-Jazz-Projektes Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee.
Mir geht es im Spielen um genau das – das Spielen. Ich bin neugierig, das zu entdecken, was ich vorher auch noch nicht kannte. Meine durchaus experimentelle, zeitgenössische Musik ist für mich deshalb eigentlich eher Abenteuermusik. Ich beschäftige mich viel mit freier Improvisation, wobei ich mich dabei vor allem als Geschichtenerzähler fühle. Mit meinem Tun geht es mir darum zu zeigen, wie grandios es sich anfühlt, sich mit sich selbst zu verbinden, und dem eigenen Ausdruck eine Stimme zu geben.
Am leichtesten fällt mir das durch Musik.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Ich bin hier seit 10 Jahren ansässig und insbesondere durch Familie und Freund*innen fest verwurzelt – dieser soziale Raum gibt mir die Möglichkeit, mich ruhig und verbunden künstlerisch zu artikulieren.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Während des letzten Jahres habe ich 5 Alben mit Mitglieder*innen meiner Band The Inflatable Knee produziert. Derzeit arbeite ich mit Leipziger Druckkünstler*innen an einem kollaborativen LP-Release des zweiten Albums dieser Reihe. Mit Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee toure ich 2022 in Gesamtdeutschland zu etwa 30 Konzerten in Sommer und Herbst.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Im Moment habe ich einen Brotberuf, um frei arbeiten zu können.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Musik selbst ist meine Inspiration – durch meine Beziehung zu ihr lerne ich mich stets besser kennen und wachse mit ihr. Ich kreiere Musik nicht, sie ist sowieso präsent – ich gebe ihr durch mein Tun eine Stimme. Auch wenn meine Musik nicht direkt danach klingt, verstehe ich mich als Rock-Musiker. Das Gefühl des unvermittelten Ausdrucks, des kraftvollen Ausdrucks durch ein Gefühl von Freiheit ist, was mich antreibt. Gleichzeitig ist es mir wichtig, immer wieder vor Augen zu haben, dass es im Kern nicht darum geht, was ich tue, sondern wie ich es tue – im Fokus meiner Projekte steht der ehrliche und unverstellte Dialog mit meinen Mitmusiker*innen – daraus entspringt ein Energiefluss, der für mich mein Sein als Musiker speist.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Mein Instrument sind Klangschalen aus Quarz. Ihre Klänge wirken hochgradig immersiv und ich arbeite seit über 10 Jahren daran, dieses Industrieprodukt, das eigentlich zur Züchtung von Silizium hergestellt wird, als Konzertinstrument oder performative Raum_Klang_Installation in möglichst vielen Kontexten bekannt zu machen.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Ich liebe die Vielfalt, die in Leipzig aber trotzdem überschaubar ist und möglich macht, verschiedenstes kennen zu lernen.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Ich arbeite an Programmen und einer CD mit dem Projekt „echo_von_nichts“. Ausserdem befasse ich mich mit Spatialsoundsystemen. Derzeit bin ich in Berlin in einer Residenz und probiere neue Kollaborationen.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Ein Grundeinkommen hielte ich für sinnvoll.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Ach. Ich habe mich in meiner Jugend fast ausschließlich mit klassischer Musik befasst, meine heroes waren Schönberg, Mahler, Bach, Schostakowitsch. Ich erinnere mich auch an Patti Smith, Peter Gabriel und Frank Zappa. Aktuell versuche ich, so wenig wie möglich Einflüsse aufzunehmen, um offen zu sein für meine eigenen Ideen.

Tiefer Drone: Ich höre ganz gerne die großen alten Flugzeuge starten im Norden.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich bin Komponist und Schlagzeuger in den Bereichen experimenteller und improvisierter Musik. An der „Hogeschool voor de kunsten Arnhem“ (NL) studierte ich Schlagzeug und wohne seit 2016 als freischaffender Musiker und selbständiger Klavierbauer in Leipzig. Meine aktuellen Schwerpunkte sind die Bands Holzig und H. C. Behrendtsen sowie mein Soloprojekt, welches sich sowohl songartigen als auch klangforschenden Strukturen widmet. Dabei steht das Wurlitzer Piano und die präparierte, subtil durch Elektronik erweiterte Bass Drum im Fokus.

Eine existierende, sich stets wandelnde und verändernde Subkultur sowie ein sympathisches Netzwerk an lokalen Künstlern.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

Im Herbst wird mein zweites Soloalbum sowie das Debutalbum von H. C. Behrendtsen veröffentlicht. Die Vorbereitungen dafür und Konzerte standen in letzter Zeit im Mittelpunkt.

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

Ich verlagere den kapitalistischen Druck weitesgehend auf mein Klavierbauer Handwerk. Das ist ziemlich bewusst so gewählt.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

Außermusikalische Inspiration ist für mich generell das Unterwegsein in und das Leben (Gärtnern) mit der Natur. Außerdem bin ich ein großer Fan von Veröffentlichungen des norwegischen Labels Hubro.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Ich bin Sébastien, komme aus Paris und wohne in Leipzig seit 2015. Ich spiele Saxophone, hauptsächlich Tenor, in verschiedenen Projekten, von Solo bis Orchester. Im Solo erweitere ich das Saxophon mit dem Laptop und Supercollider, eine Klangprogrammierungssprache, mit dem ich künstliche Klänge generiere oder das Saxophon im 3D-Raum verteile und bewege.

Was macht Leipzig attraktiv für dich als Künstler*in ?

Die Subkultur! Ich habe hier eine sehr dynamischen Stadt gefunden, wo die Leute oft vielseitig interessiert sind. Man sieht oft die gleiche Gesichte bei sehr unterschiedlichen Veranstaltungen: eine Vernissage von einer Installation, ein Punk Konzert, eine Party oder unsere Konzerte von LeipziXP. Ich finde das sehr erfrischend im Vergleich zum Paris oder Berlin, wo die Szenen für experimentelle Musik sehr spezialisiert sind. Ich muss auch sagen, dass es bisher schon einfach für mich war, mich zu vernetzen, ein günstiges Atelier oder Studio zu finden und Stattliche Unterstützung bei Kulturprojekten zu bekommen.

Womit warst du in letzter Zeit beschäftigt und was sind deine Projekte für die nähere Zukunft ?

In letzter Zeit habe ich ein neues Solo für Saxophon und Ambisonics entwickelt. Mit der Unterstützung der KdFS und des Programms Neustart/Kultur bei Musikfonds und GVL konnte ich mich während der Pandemie auf dieses neue Solo konzentrieren. Ambisonics ist eine Technik zur Positionierung und Bewegung von Klang im 3D-Raum. Sie ermöglicht es mir, einen immersiven Klangraum zu schaffen und die Möglichkeiten des Saxophons zu vervielfachen. In den nächsten Monaten werde ich an meinem ursprünglichen Solo arbeiten. Bisher war es nur akustisch und ich werde es zu einem elektroakustischen Solo erweitern. Ich versuche, digitale Synthesizer, die ich mit Supercollider programmiere, mit dem Signal des Saxophons zu kontrollieren. Ich habe bereits Tests damit gemacht und es fühlt sich wie ein sehr spannendes Forschungsfeld an!

Spürst du einen kapitalistischen Druck in deinem künstlerischen Leben? Wie wäre es ohne ihn ?

In letzter Zeit habe ich mich sehr privilegiert damit angefühlt, da ich verschiedenen Stipendien nacheinander bekommen habe, welche mir von diesem Druck während der Pandemie befreit haben. Hoffentlich kann ich in die Zukunft von meinen Tätigkeiten als Musiker, Shiatsu Praktiker und Veranstalter bei LeipziXP gut genug leben, dass ich ihn nicht so stark spüren muss. Der Druck sehe ich aber starker von der Veranstalterperspektive. Wenn die Veranstaltungsorte für experimentelle Musik weltweit besser unterstützt wären, würden wir als Musiker.innen auch weniger Druck haben: es würde heißen mehr Konzertmöglichkeiten, faire Gage, einfachere Organisation von Touren.

Was sind deine Einflüsse und Inspirationen, deine Fokusse in deiner Arbeit ?

In meiner Arbeit fokussiere ich mich auf die Feinheiten der Klänge. Ich arbeite mit Klang als Materie, die ich langsam verarbeiten und manipulieren kann, indem ich jedes Detail, jeden Oberton spüre. Dabei bin ich sehr von der französischen Szene inspiriert, weil es dort eine sehr starke Tradition für experimentelles Saxophon gibt. Aber mein größter Einfluss sind die Menschen, mit denen ich zusammenarbeite. In diesem Fall ist Artur Vidal von meinem Sax Duet sehr wichtig für mich, ebenso wie das IMO Orchestra, mit denen ich meine musikalische Sprache entwickelt habe. Aber auch die Initiative von WISP und ZiMMT hier in Leipzig, mit denen ich die Ambisonics-Technik entdeckt habe und ohne die ich mein neues Solo nicht entwickelt hätte.

Wenn Leipzig ein Geräusch wäre, welches wäre es ?

Wenn ich das literal antworten muss, würde es wahrscheinlich die Straßenbahngeräusche sein, die an den Häuserfassaden in der Eisenbahstraße widerhallen. Wenn ich das metaphorisch sehe, wäre es das Summen eines Bienenstocks, aus dem sich regelmäßig bestimmte Töne abheben würden.

Kannst du dich kurz vorstellen ?

Musiker, Komponist, Performer, Regisseur, mein Interesse gilt dem Komplex Partitur, Plan, Abbildung und ihren Realisationen: von der Exekution streng deterministischer Programme bis zum Versuch des Nicht-Vorhersehens und den zwischen diesen Konzepten bestehenden Verbindungen und Feedbacks. Meine Arbeitsbereiche sind Musik, Theater und Performance.

Das wechselt stark. Im Moment Niklas Luhmann, Hozan Yamamoto, seit langem wieder mal John Coltrane, immer und immer wieder Morton Feldman, immer und immer wieder die Welt direkt um mich herum, immer und andauernd das, was ich höre in ihr.

Wenn Leipzig ein Geräusch wäre, welches wäre es ?

Ein lange anhaltendes, etwas dreckiges, komplexes, zentral in der tieferen Region des Hörbereiches angesiedeltes, aber immer wieder mit kleinen scharfen Akzenten, Impulsen und hoch rauschigen Flächen durchsetztes Röhren im Bereich mezzopiano, interpunktiert durch ganz vereinzelte ppp – Schläge im Subbass – Sektor

mit der Konzeption meines aktuellen instruments und aktivistischer Arbeit. musikalisch plane ich ein variables elektronisch/akustisches ensemble – ohne Instrumente mit vorgegebener Stimmung, ohne loops, delays und wenig hall.

ich spüre gerade garkeinen druck in meinem künstlerischen leben.

keine Ahnung – wenn ich anfange zu spielen ist die inspiration da. mein Fokus momentan ist es in supercollider codierte sounds mit Controllern in Echtzeit, feinfühlig zu spielen.
